Featured Stone – Creamy Serpentine
One of my favorite stones – Creamy Serpentine
I brought a small block of this when I was in China last year. Serpentine is a stone similar to Jade but not as hard. It is found all over the world including NZ, and some types of NZ serpentine are Pounamu.
As I mentioned this creamy serpentine is from China. I love carving it for a few different reasons.
(1) Colour, it is this amazing creamy, fatty white. Its very warm visually. Sometimes a lot of translucence can make a stone look hard whereas this has just the right amount to glow but still look warm and soft.
(2) Carving. It is totally uniform in colour and has no inclusions(other minerals mixed through it) which just makes it very consistent to carve. Its a little softer than jade so always carves and finishes quicker and easier than I expect.
I’m carving some today – a small grooved leaf plate pendant
Here are a few pieces I’ve made out of it,
Its a beautiful sunny (cold) day here – Waikato, NZ
