Carnelian Barn Owl – Steps

This sculpture was my first 3D Carnelian carving. Unless you start with a large piece, Carnelian is a bit of a mystery stone carving-wise. Until you carve off the outer layer which can look cracked with lots of colour you don’t know what it will be like inside.

This stone ended up matching the bird perfectly with the majority of it being wonderfully clear with some yellow/brown patterns on the chest and back and a deep colour change in the tail. I really like the design, it reminds me of Russian dolls.

The eyes are inlaid Pounamu (NZ Jade).
