Engraved Pakohe Toki
This toki is carved out of a light green Pakohe and engraved with a fern design on the back.
Stone: Pakohe/argillite is a type of metamorphosed mudstone that was commonly used for tools in pre European times. It occurs in a range of colours from black through to a soft green.
Design: This pendant is based on a toki (which is a adze or axe shape). Larger toki would have been for woodworking jobs like canoes or houses while smaller ones would have been used for finer work like carving. They have been recorded from ancient Egyptians up to the present day (now mostly made out of metal).
