Tangiwai Pounamu Pekapeka

This is a carving of our short tailed bat. Three types of bats /pekapeka are New Zealand’s only native land mammals.

Tangiwai / bowenite is a clear or translucent variety of serpentine. This stone has chatoyant bands going through it and is really translucent.  It has an amazing glass – like quality when backlit.
